Thean Mittai is a traditional sweet. It has a crispy outer covering and a sweet juicy inner part.

It is very simple and easy to make.

Ingredients :

Idly rice - 1 cup
Urad dhal - 3/4th of a 1/4 cup
Sago / Maavu Javvarisi- 1 tblsp
Salt a pinch.

Wash and soak idly rice, Urad dhal and sago for 4 hours. Grind into a thick batter by adding only 1/2 cup of water and a pinch of salt.

To the batter add:

Baking soda - 1/8 tsp
Orange colour + red colour - 1/8 tsp


Sugar syrup:

Sugar - 300 gms or 1.5 cups
Water - 3/4 cup

Heat water and sugar for 5 min. Let the consistencyof syrup be a little before one string.

Heat oil. Wet your fingers and pinch a small piece of batter and drop it in oil. Keep the oil in medium low heat. Fry all sides till crisp and add it to sugar syrup.
Let it soak for 15 min. Collect the then mittai and spread it on a plate to dry. Alternatively you can roll them in a mixture of powdered sugar and crystal sugar and store them.


ЁЯУНЁЯУНЁЯУНЁЯУНPlease ensure that all the items added are clean. If there are stones, dust or sand particles it will burst.

If you are using mixie, keep the soaked items in fridge for 1 hour and then grind using less water. The batter should be very smooth. Otherwise It will come out hard.
